1975 Girls School and Society
In 1975, International Women’s Year (and decade) was declared by the United Nations, and in Australia the newly created Australian Schools Commission produced a report called, Girls, School and Society. This report emphatically called for education in Australia to be ‘anti-sexist’ and criticised the idea of treating boys and girls differently.
‘Education should be about human rather than sex-specific development. There should be no distinction made between girls and boys in school curriculum or organisation, nor any sex-related expectations about behaviour, interests, capacities, personality traits or life patterns.’ (source: Commonwealth Schools Commission)
